Dura Shelton Carter of Wilmington, NC quietly passed away at Spring Arbor Assisted Living on the morning of Tuesday, May 2, 2017. She was 96 years young. She was born in Stokes County, on September 30, 1920, to the late Troy Franklin Shelton and Saloan Hennis Shelton. Dura was the fourth of ten children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Frank G. Carter, Sr. of Ruffin, NC. Frank and Dura spent their golden years together, between Ruffin, and their second home in Oak Island, NC, moving there permanently in 1996.

Dura S. Carter is survived by her two children, Frank G. Carter, Jr. and wife, Dr. Deborah Carter of Wilmington and Thomas D. Carter and wife, Caroline Thompson of Halifax, VA. Also surviving are brothers, Cecil Shelton of Walnut Cove, NC and Chester Shelton of Westfield, NC. Four grandchildren: Christie Carter Berry of Wilmington, Carrie Anne Carter Mike of Reidsville, Colin G. Carter and Alexander J. Carter of Wilmington, and three step-grandchildren, Tyler Fridley of Lynchburg, VA, Isaac J. Schleifer of Lehi, Utah, and Abigail L. Schleifer of Halifax, VA. She also is survived by three great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She had a special love for her nephew and niece, Jimmy and Anne Chandler.

A memorial service to celebrate Dura’s life will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Ruffin United Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank the staff of Spring Arbor Assisted Living and the many friends Dura has made along the way in 96 years. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested donations to Ruffin United Methodist Church or to the Cape Fear Community College Scholarship Fund.
